Diablo Valley College Meets Student Needs with Virtual Health Care

Faced with the absence of an on-campus health center and limited daytime counseling hours, Diablo Valley College (DVC) recognized an urgent need to provide students with faster, more flexible access to medical and mental health care. While the college originally planned to expand in-person services, the onset of the pandemic prompted a shift in their strategy toward a more adaptable virtual care model.

To bridge these gaps, DVC leveraged a systemwide agreement through CollegeBuys and utilized student-raised funds to partner with TimelyCare. This partnership provides a comprehensive clinical care solution designed to support existing campus resources. Through the platform, students gain access to a wide array of services, including:

  • On-demand and scheduled medical and mental health care
  • Health coaching and care navigation
  • Basic needs support to promote holistic wellness

Emily Stone, Dean of Counseling and Student Success at DVC, noted that the CollegeBuys agreement was instrumental in the rollout.

“TimelyCare’s CollegeBuys systemwide agreement ensured that the product and services had been well vetted for our students. And it made the procurement of the contract seamless. Additionally, their customer service and client success team have been incredibly responsive and easy to work with, providing all the tools to brand and market the TimelyCare services.”

The transition to virtual care has yielded significant results, particularly in accessibility and student outcomes. The platform’s efficiency is reflected in an average wait time of just five minutes for on-demand emotional support.

The data also underscores the necessity of 24/7 coverage: 44% of student visits occurred after standard business hours, when traditional campus resources would have been unavailable. Perhaps most notably, 30% of students reported that they would not have sought help at all if TimelyCare had not been an option. This increased access is translating into measurable wellness gains, with 78% of visits resulting in students reporting an improvement in their mental health.

“Both our Care Team and Wellness Team see the TimelyCare platform’s 24/7/365 support as an integral part of the wellness services we offer students. When we cannot serve students’ brief therapy needs, we refer students to TimelyCare’s TalkNow on-demand emotional support. It has been a lifeline for our team to have this resource to offer students,” said Stone.
